A pair of carved ivory, wood, gilt and mother-of-pearl okimono modeled
as two jubilant boys at play. The sculptures are mounted upon
gold-lacquered wood stands characteristic of the work of the artist. Miya-o
signature plaques. Height, 14. Meiji Period. Japan. (This artwork
represents an extraordinary departure in the use of materials for the
artist, who is noted for the most brilliant parcel-gilt and bronze
sculptures of his time.) |
