Tibeto - Chinese Yongle mark and period (1403 - 1424) Gilt copper alloy 19.4 cm. /7 3/4 in. |
A superb corpus of
metal sculpture commissioned by the Yongle Emperor (1403 - 24) is
remarkably consistent in style and execution. The casting is faultless,
the gilding rich and superbly rendered. This fine image of Avalokitesvara
bears the Yongle reign (1403 - 24) mark, one of only three published
Yongle period works to represent standing figures. It is also unusual for
Yongle period images to exhibit raised decoration on the garments, such as
that on the lower garment of this sculpture, but at least two other
examples can be cited.
