An important and early polychromed oolithic limestone representation of the Taoist deity, K'uei Hsing. K'uei Hsing was deified in the Yuan dynasty , ca.1314, and represents the God of Literature, and the God of the North Star. He is represented holding a brush pen in one hand and the other cloth cap, such as was worn by a scholar. He stands upon a carp dragon which is synonymous for the transformation brought about by the literary success of the industrious student. |
