The Art of Conservation: Materials, Methods and Ethics
Two-day conference for everyone interested or involved in the care of art, including museum curators and registrars, historic collection managers, student conservators, art dealers and art advisers, and members of the public with an interest in the arts and heritage. The conference comprises a series of lectures and discussions about current techniques and materials used by conservators of inorganic and organic two and three dimensional art, and the ethical dilemmas these can create.
Areas covered include historic and contemporary paintings and sculpture, works on paper, ceramics, furniture, textiles and ancient artefacts.
Speakers include: Penny Bendall, Jenny Band, Robert Child, Jo Dillon, Rupert Featherstone, Lyndsey Morgan, Mike Podmaniczky.

Underwater Archaeology in China and New Findings on Fujian Ceramics
by Professor Li Jian’An, Director of the Archaeology Institute, Fujian Provincial Museum.
Professor Li will talk about the important underwater excavations he has performed during the last 20 years. Shipwrecks from Southern Song, Yuan and Qing dynasties have been discovered in Fujian, Guangdong and Liaoning provinces. The ceramics carried on these ships, together with findings from kiln excavations carried out since the 1990s, point to the significant role played by Fujian in the East-West commercial and cultural exchange.

Maharaja: Representation and Reality
by Barbara Ramusack, Rosemary Crill, Susan Stronge and Karni Singh Jasol.
Explore the multiple legacies of India’s kings their impact on the cultural history of the sub-continent, their role as international patrons, the creation and continuing prevalence of the stereotype and the present-day identity of the Maharaja. Curators and academics will cover various aspects of Indian culture, art and architecture and textiles and dress. The morning session will focus particularly on royal patronage and material culture and the afternoon will examine changing representations of the maharajas.
