'Thirty Years of Solitude'

Showing a selection of photographs and films by some of Iran's most talented contemporary women artists, this is the first exhibition in the UK to feature artists who all live and work in Iran. Curated by architect Faryar Javaherian and artist Haleh Anvari, the exhibition focuses on the feelings of anxiety, isolation and the sense of loss that Iranian society has experienced in the last 30 years.
Presented in collaboration with New Hall, Cambridge.

'World Cinema: A Dialogue'
An exhibition of contemporary oil paintings by Kurchi Dasgupta

Inauguration 18th September @ 6.30pm, by His Excellency High Commissioner for India, Shri Shiv Shankar Mukherjee

Indian Artist, Kurchi Dasgupta from Calcutta will be showing a series of unique oil paintings on classic films from the world over, that are both evocative and surreal in nature. She covers a wide repertoire of films in her work including, Kurosawa’s Raan, Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali and works of Kubrick, Bergman, Tarkovsky, Ghatak, Truffaut and Woody Allen.

Kurchi’s work aims in bringing the two disparate, yet similar, worlds of film and painting together and represent her visual dialogue with films that have had a profound influence on cultures from around the world . She says, ‘I am trying to recontextualise everyday reality by drilling into the depths of the subconscious, and provide the viewer/participator with a new set of tools with which to perceive and interpret existence...'.

'The Dynamics of Diversity: Tribal Cultures in the Eastern Himalayas'
Historical and contemporary objects from the British Museum will show the cultural diversity of Arunachal Pradesh, in North East India, reflecting two tribal groups - the animist Apa Tani from the central belt and the Buddhist Monpa close to the Tibet frontier. Including textiles, block-printing, basketry and painting aided by photographs and sound recordings.

'Works by Kishio Suga'
The artist’s first major solo show in the UK.
A leading exponent of Mono-ha (school of things), a movement that swept the Japanese art world during the 1970s and 1980s. Kishio Suga uses materials such as wood, stone, metal fragments and glass sheets.
The exhibition is part of the JAPAN-UK 150 celebrations.

'Utsavam: Music from India'
Taking its name from the ancient Sanskrit word ‘Utsavam’ meaning festivities and / or celebration, Utsavam: Music from India presents the subcontinent’s rich musical heritage through music, film footage and musical instruments to provide a unique insight into traditional Indian music. It draws on extensive curatorial fieldwork from across rural regions of the subcontinent from Assam to Kerala by ethnomusicologist and broadcaster Rolf Killius and curator Margaret Birley.

'Water’s Sound by Shiraishi Masako'
An exhibition of monumental ceramic and bamboo installations by Japanese artist, Shiraishi Masako. An example of her award-winning sculpture was seen at this year's RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

'Khula Dhoka - the Open Doors Exhibition'
An exhibition with 108 artists. It introduces the ten best Nepali artists to the UK. Many well-known Western artists are supporting the project. The symbolism of doors flung wide open reflects an open mind - an important creative and spiritual exercise when labels of caste, religion, ethnicity, gender, sexuality and politics still create profound divisions within Nepalese society.

'Zen Calligraphy by Yamaoka Tesshu'
An exhibition to mark the 120th anniversary of the death of the statesman and master swordsman Yamaoka Tesshu. It will include hanging scrolls by Tesshu, his eminent contemporaries Takahashi Deishu (1835-1903) and Katsu Kaishu (1823-1899), as well as the late Professor Terayama Tanchu, founder of the Society for the Way of the Zen Brush (Hitsuzenkai), who formed this collection.

New Permanent Display

'The Arts of Thailand'
A new permanent display, funded by the Royal Thai Government, to celebrate the 80th birthday of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The display includes the museum’s finest Thai Buddhist sculptures in bronze and stone from the 7th to the 19th centuries, together with works of decorative art associated with the Thai court and with monasteries.
