One of a group of 4 carved wooden statues depicting the
four Heavenly Kings

Fujian Province, China. Ming Dynasty
W:59 D:41 H:80cm

The four figures are depicted in dramatic poses, feet akimbo, hands gesturing and drapery floating in all directions. The figures are in an excellent state of preservation. All features are finely drawn and the armour ornamentation and clothing worked in great detail. The gesso is intact and the majority of the original paintwork in excellent condition along with some gilding.

Such groups of figures are usually found in bronze or stone.
