Brandt Oriental Art

A rare and amusing carved ivory figure of a European merchant, bearing a vase containing red coral
China. Early 18th Century.
(Excluding stand) 6” (15cm).

The figure has long curling hair and a folding cape over a buttoned waistcoat and laced boots, with a faithful dog at his side. (Two from this set are to be exhibited at the “Encounters Exhibition”, the Meeting of Asia & Europe, at the V&A Museum, in Nov ’04. Lent by The Peabody Museum, MA.)
