Buddha

Buddha
Sino-Tibetan
17th-18th c.
gilded bronze
H: 17.7cm (7")

A beautifully cast figure of Buddha Shakyamuni, seated in dhyanasana on a double lotus base with beaded rims and intricate diaper designs incorportating vajras. The right hand is lowered in varada (charity) mudra, while the left lies in the lap in dhyana (meditation) mudra. HE wears a long flowing robes, finely incised with floral medallions and scrolling borders.

The downcast eyes and serenely benign expression of a Buddha is enhanced by the elegant posture and proportion. The overall figure is richly gilt, with minimal wear. The base plate and consecration are missing.
