This Modern and Contemporary South Asian Auction will feature works from across India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, capturing the beauty and diversity of art from the subcontinent. The star lot is Maqbool Fida Husain’s 1961 masterpiece, Bulls. This painting is one of the artist’s most recognizable works, gracing the cover of the seminal 1971 monograph on the artist, published by Harry N. Abrams.



The selection of works represents key groups of artists who embodied the spirit of innovation that occurred during the twentieth century. Featuring works from the Bombay Progressive Artists’ Group, Baroda Group, Bengal School, Neo-tantric artists and Pakistan, the mission of this sale is to explore not only the variety of cultures in South Asia, but also the broad range of artists and how they interpreted the world around them.
