This hemp kesa, worn draped around the left shoulder and over the arm, is a type of Buddhist ritual vestment worn when transmitting the teachings of the Buddha. This kesa was somber elegance, equal to the philosophy of tea that was quite popular during the late 1700's. During this period brown dyes were popular in Japanese textiles and there were over 100 shades of brown. This kesa embodies the Zen ideals of restraint, self control and humility. Very good condition. Detail: close-up view |
