8 DOCUMENTATION

Architectural Documentation Project: Traditional Tibetan architecture has not yet been extensively researched and documented. THF works on a long-term project to document all aspects of the traditional architecture, in the form of photos, drawings and interviews with builders and craftsmen. Under an ongoing programme, as many historic sites in and outside of Lhasa (in 1999 more than two dozen) are being surveyed by draftsmen from Lhasa under supervision from John Harrison, and thousands of pictures have documented the sites in all detail. This material will be made available via the internet (see the THF website where a lot of information on Lhasa can already be accessed). This project has been supported by Ford Foundation ($8,000), Trace Foundation ($3323) and Pioneer Valley Friends of Tibet ($3468).

New publication: Part of the GTZ "Eigenmassnahme" project contained publication of an awareness-building booklet about the historic buildings in central Lhasa. Published in a tri-lingual (Chinese-Tibetan-English) format, it contains information about the history of many important sites located in the Barkor area. It was officially introduced during the handover meeting for Merunyingba, and since then has been distributed to a large number of officials in Lhasa and throughout China, and to about 120 families living in the Barkor. THF have also published a new survey map of the Barkor, showing ground floor plans of all the remaining historic buildings.
Articles by or about THF have also appeared in the Asia & West Pacific Network for Urban Conservation Newsletter (vol.6 no.1 1999), in the Hong Kong art magazine Orientations, October 1999 issue, and in the German architecture magazine Detail, no.7 1999.
