Sakyamuni Buddha (Sanscrit) / Burkhan (Mongolian)
Mongolian
5.5 x 4.5 cm
Painted on Cloth
Mid-19th To Early 20th Century

This is the iconographic form of the historical Buddha. His hands are in the mudra of earth-touching and of meditation. The color of his halo and of the radiance behind him vary considerably from one depiction to another and so allow an artist some freedom.
