Founded in 2003, The Sweet Tea House Contemporary Tibetan Art Gallery is named after the “The Sweet Tea House Artists Association”. This Association was a well-known artist group, formed in Lhasa in 1985. The founder of the gallery, Gonkar Gyatso was also one of the pioneers of the artist group in Tibet. (www.gonkargyatso.ac.uk)
The gallery is dedicated to promoting contemporary Tibetan art and brings together upcoming young talents by exhibiting their works. The gallery not only focuses on art created inside Tibet but also features works of Tibetan artists from all parts of the world, regardless of their political stand, situation, background, and education. One of the main objectives of the gallery is to give Tibetan artists the opportunity to visit the West and gain first hand exposure and experience of Western art and culture. Therefore from 2007, the gallery has started awarding a single “Visiting Artist Award” to promising Tibetan artists as a means of providing the deserving candidate with a chance to visit and observe the vibrant art scene in London. It is hoped that the artists would then gain more confidence in the value of their own creations. The first gallery of its kind in the West, the Sweet Tea House not only promotes new Tibetan artists, consequently, it also offers affordable, original art to the public. Located in the heart of London’s artistic scene in the East end, the gallery enjoys being amidst a diverse and multi-cultural environment. |
