3. Rare Tang dynasty foreign dancer
A rare Chinese painted pottery figure of a foreign youth, in dancing pose, with curly black hair. Remnants of original red, black and green pigment remain throughout.
Oxford TL test certificate.
From an old Parisian collection assembled in the 1960's and 1970's.
An almost identical figure is in the Metropolitan Museum, New York.
Another similar is in the Cernuschi Museum, Paris.
Another is illustrated in The Art of the Tang Potter, Thames and Hudson 1960, pl. 82, where it is described as 'Youth with Graeco-Roman features'.
A more likely theory is that these figures represent Polynesians who came to China as traders or entertainers.
