'Microhistory' of Ishikawa Komei and his influence on Meiji Sculpture

The author of this informative work, Martha Chaiklin, an independent curator and historian at McGill University in Toronto, introduces her essay, saying "This article proposes a microhistory or marginal biography of sculptor Ishikawa Kōmei (Mitsuaki) 石川光明[2] (1852–1913) to provide a lens that will magnify the details as to how ‘cultural forms evolve in relation to political and economic structures’."

I found the piece to be a good overview not only of Komei but of several other sculptors influenced by him, some of whose work spanned ivory, wood and metals.

This appeared in "East Asian History" (No. 39, 2014), published online by the Australian Centre for China in the World, The Australian National University.

If you haven't already discovered it, it should be required reading for those who aspire to collect Japanese sculpture. Also has a decent bibliography of its own.

Best regards,

Bill H.
