The above inscription is written in Gyosho on the base of a Japanese cloisonne vase I was recently asked to translate by a friend. The only other portion was a single stroke Hiragana 'Si' or 'Shi' off to the right. This is the third time I have seen a variant of this inscription- others beginning with 'ichi'- but this was by far the most clearly written example and I am absolutely certain of the accuracy of my transposing it into Kaisho, though the context escapes me. Does anyone have experience of this/these inscriptions on cloisonne products, and their meaning? I have tried translating it into Chinese and it doesn't seem to make any more sense than it does in Japanese. I apologise for not picturing the vase- it is not mine to publish.
