I think conventional wisdom suggests a stand-alone "JAPAN" mark probably dates to sometime before "MADE IN JAPAN" appeared around 1920, though I've heard that some of the same "JAPAN" markings may have been applied around the time of the US occupation of Japan from 1945-54. In any event, this was Japan's attempt to compete with the English "Willow" pattern, and the only dated pieces I could spot online simply said 20th century. Some of them were marked "MADE IN JAPAN" and looked fairly new.
