Subject:Please help identify this buddha statue
Posted By: Peter Thu, Feb 23, 2017 IP: 190.194.226.18

My father bough this buddha in a trip to Asia in the late 50's. I'd like to know where does it come from and its age. It appears to be a wood structure with a golden layer on the surface. The statue is 92cm high (36.22 inches). Thanks for any feedback.

Thai, Rattanakosin Era (under 250 years old). May be missing an Ushnisha, or spire, on top.

Thanks Paul for your reply. So you are confident this is an original and not a replica? What tyoe of wood would you say this is made of? I'm attaching more detailed picture, thanks

All I can say is it looks like it could be an original, an older, one, 100-250 years old. But to be certain, someone knowledgeable would need to examine it in person. Or maybe they could tell from photos alone, but I can't. My hunch is that it was old in the 1950s when your father acquired it, not made for tourists. The wood could be teak. Your photo didn't come through, but if it shows a naturally aged and eaten away underside to the wood base, that would be encouraging.

Hi Paul, strange that the photo is not visible to you, I can see it on my end, just right click the image and save it to your desktop, anyway I'm attaching a slightly lower resolution one, let me know if you can see it. I also believe it's an original and not made for tourists, but I'm not a specialist, I only base my guess on the fact that my father told me so, plus he had a hard time with customs at that time (the piece stayed in customs for almost 15 years until it was cleared for checkout, never knew the reasons)

Yes, that's an old one. It was used a lot, too. Meaning that people paying their respects attached additional gold leaf to the surface, especially to the face, where the surface has become quite uneven because of the build up over time (and then it flakes off).

Nice one! Don't sell it cheap. Display it in a good place. Maybe offer it some incense once in a while :-)

Thanks Paul, I have no idea what "cheap" would be. How much would a fair price(approx.) be?
Didn't know about incense, not knowledgeable in buddhism, good to learn! I'll try it!! :-)
