Subject:Help to identify small porcelain boats
Posted By: Debbie Fri, Mar 10, 2017 IP: 71.193.245.170

Does anyone know what these are called and what they are for? I believe these are from Japan, as they belonged to my uncle who lived in Japan during the 1960s-1970s. They measure about 3 inches long and 1/2 inch wide and 1/2 inch tall. They have a flat base on the bottom. There are 9 of them. Thank you!

I believe these are chopstick rests for use on the dining table. Probably were new when your uncle acquired them in Japan.

Best regards,

Bill H.

these are meant as rests for one's chopsticks while eating and are popular collectibles for visitors to Japan because they are cheaper than fine porcelain and often whimsical, here are some contemporary examples: https://everythingchopsticks.com/chopstick-rests-holders.html

Chopstick rests. Usually in sets of five. Your uncle must have lost one>
