Subject:Symbols on Japanese Bronze Censer?
Posted By: Glenn Conti Sun, Feb 26, 2017 IP: 73.112.2.68

Hello sirs or madams. This is a bronze Japanese censer I just ordered from fukuoka, kyushu, Japan. Any help deciphering the symbols would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much in advance!

Hi this is an hibachi. It was used as a room warmer . It would contain a bed of fine ash with a mound of hot coals in the center.
The wooden base is to protect the tatami flooring from being damaged by the heat.
Regards
Sue

Thank you Sue. This item is 20 cm high and 27 cm in diameter so I agree it does seem too big to be a censer. But it is a small hibachi too. :) Also, please notice the air space and vent holes above the wooden base - to me it seems these were there to dissipate much more heat than would be generated from just burning incense. Thank you for your observation again Sue. Please also other chime in on anything you may know about it.

I known nothing about Japanese symbols but the photo of this symbol is familiar to me as a human male - maybe? Of course I could be totally off base. Interesting though.

Please see the two pictures. The center symbol in each photo are very similar to each other, so I am thinking they must be of a related and similar theme. Yes - no??
