Posted By: Bill H Sun, Feb 12, 2017 Some, such as I, may be waiting to see more images in hopes of getting some idea as to whether this is written by a Chinese, Japanese or Korean. Otherwise, nobody will know how to translate or transliterate it it correctly. |

Posted By: Bill H Mon, Feb 20, 2017 I'm assisting Mr Burns with these additional images of what appears to be a case for a painting or scroll. I'm uncertain as to whether I've read all of the characters correctly, but starting with the right-hand image and reading down and across to the left, the gilt stacks look to be: |

Posted By: Bill H Wed, Feb 22, 2017 The Xinsi year last came along in 2001 and at 60 year intervals beforehand; i.e., 1941, 1881, 1821, 1761 and so forth. However, since the inscription refers to a copy of something painted by Lang Shining, an artist who has been copied for more than two centuries, there's no reason to believe this item of yours is very old. Also, I'm not certain that my reading of the hall name is correct in this instance. It would be best if a native scholar comments on this point. |

Posted By: Bill H Sat, Feb 25, 2017 Rat, much obliged for you watching my back. A Google character search of 世綵堂 (Shi Cai Tang - Hall of brilliant Generations?) turns out to be the name of the ancestral hall of fame of the Liao clan (廖氏 - Liao shi) in Guangdong and Fujian provinces. If I understand the story I pieced together from Google, this name is something the Liaos earned through imperial honors granted to famous ancestors. I did some spot checks and didn't see anything clearly indicating use as a person's name, though the hall name turned up in what apparently were some brand names. |
