Subject:Chinese Carved Jade Bi-Disk for Review
Posted By: John Cabello Wed, Feb 15, 2017 IP: 31.54.208.253

Hi
I wonder if you could help me. I've recently picked an attractive looking Chinese carved jade Bi-Disk. The disk is unusual in that one side is predominantly green, whilst the other is brown. The edges show lighter relief carving, getting deeper as you move towards the center. There are 6 dragons on each side, with 2 within circular cartouches and 4 conjoined around the periphery. Also the green side shows more evidence of mineralisation over time, than the brown side.

First, find a sound (solid) spot, and, with a strong needle, use enough pressure to make a make a 2-3 mm scratch,
then tell us the color of this tiny scratch.. white or black??

Hi Ernest
Please excuse the delay in answering. My answers don't seem to always get uploaded, even after 12 hours.
Yes the stone does not scratch with steel, rather the steel leaves a shiny grey mark. I can scratch it with a thin quartz crystal, in which case it is a white mark
Regards
John

At least you now can be satisfied that it is real Jade, and not a softer stone.

Hi Ernest
A steel (even hardened) does not scratch it. It does leave a shiny grey deposit of metal where the steel has rubbed. If I use a small sharp quartz crystal, it makes a slightly white scratch.
I do have another Bi-Disk, which is probably serpentine (very ornately carved), but which scratches on steel. I'll include a picture of those too. They came from the same source as the 2 pieces of cloisonne I have also posted on the forum.
Kind regards
John

These are modern carvings. Most likely not jade either.
