Subject:Help in identifying an Indonesian carving
Posted By: Sergey Sun, Jan 08, 2017 IP: 36.84.13.42

I've bought this item in an 'antique' shop in Jakarta (more like a flea market actually).
As one can suppose from the back picture, it was made to be hung.
The owner said it was from Toraja and about 50 years old.
About the latter, I hardly have doubts, given the use of plastic beads for pupils. Might be of a bit later date, but definitely not much older.
But as for the former, I have never seen anything like this before, and it doesn't seem to fit into general pattern of Toraja carving. Have to admit, though, that Indonesian carving is not the field I feel myself comfortable in.
Would greatly appreciate any hints on its origin and function.
Regards

Your carving appears to be one of the "antiques" made for the tourist market and sold in the shops on Jalan Surabaya in Jakarta. Be sure to wash your hands after handling the carving as some are aged under unsanitary conditions.

As to the function of this object, it is most likely a "baby carrier". To find out more, you can google "Indonesian tribal baby carrier".
