Subject:help with mark, age identification, please
Posted By: Daniel Sat, Sep 17, 2016 IP: 90.212.20.11

I own this nice, I guess ginger jar. It's about 9 inches high, satsuma I think, gilded, textured. Surface has fine crazing, so I assume it's not very modern, anything between 60-120 years?. I've tried to identify mark underneath, but it's not easy. So, nothing about maker or provenience, nor age. Anyone can help, please?

The mark is: Ming Zhi - 明志 - Akira Kokorozashi
Meiji but more likely, in my opinion, Taisho period. I have noticed the lacking of the lid.
Kind regards
Mario

I have 2 vases and 2 bowls with the same marking as the vase above. What period do you think they are, and what value?
Thanks
Neil

I think they are Taisho period or early Showa. So 1912 - 1935. They are beautiful. The two couple can be valued more o less 500-600 $.
Kind regards
Mario

Hi Mario,

Many thanks for your help. I saw on a website that the mark was identified as Japanese, Ming Zhi, Akira Kokorozashi, Meiji period - do you agree with the maker / mark? but think it's a later period? Do you have more information about the maker?
Regards
Neil

I have no other information about the maker. I think it's not Meiji but probably Taisho. This opinion is due to quality of colors, reliefs, gold decorations and care of details. In other words an intuitive valuation.
Kind regards
Mario

Dear Phoebe,
It's probably late Meiji and its value is more or less 200/250 USD. I have many catalogues about Satsuma pottery but I haven't found no information.
However, here is a link for the sale of an other Kokorozashi's piece: https://www.etsy.com/it/listing/550451835/ming-zhi-akira-kokorozashi-meiji-periodo.
Thank You
Kind regards
Mario

I do not agree with the name Akira Kokorozashi 明志, the 2nd character is just not correct, by NO means it says 志, but more likely 抬 which makes it someting like Meitai in Japanese. I agree with Bokaba, who's saying by a similar posting of this mark: Chinese copies of Japanese Satsuma.
See: http://www.softdevelop.com/phpforum/index.php?method=detailAll&Id=97941&PHPSESSID=ej6t8iilmnri7c5mjd28npdej3

He is correct, this doesn't look Japanese Satsuma at all. That all kinds of sites just copy this name, because somewhere on the net someone says so, doesn't make it a fact.
Regards,
Martin.
