Subject:Size of rank badges
Posted By: Ben Wu Tue, Apr 05, 2005

Most of the Chinese rank badges I encounter are about 12x12 inches in size, but sometimes I run into some which are smaller, perhaps around 9x9". Does anyone know anything about these smaller badges? Were they for kids? Are they less valuable? Thanks for your help!

Rank badges of smaller size could have several possible reasons - for Children, for women, for elderly officials. Standard size is larger, but can also vary between the summer and winter PUFU surcoat. Ming badges are quite a bit larger, and it may be that early Qing were larger and gradually diminished in size standardizing by the mid 18th century. I think in most cases value will still be based on quality over size.
