yes this is authentic satsuma...think its the daruma or arhat pattern....Looks like certain marks used by choshuzan but never seen the mark with the archaic style dragons...
Yes you have an authentic piece of Meiji satsuma ware...Will be worth something when the japanese market picks up!!

I have found a mark depicting what appears to be similar to the archaic style dragons marked on the base of my bowl! They are featured on the base of item 511 on the following link
http://images1.bonhams.com/original?src=Images/live/2013-04/24/S-21101-0-1.pdf
Interior of depicted bowl is like mine - however exterior is very different. Size is also similar. Would never have found this info without the help I received on this forum. Thanks so much

Top row saws Dai Ni Hon. ( Made in Tokyo )

The maker is Choshuzan (Characters in left row )
I'm not sure what the first row of characters say.

I believe the first row of characters would be read as "Satsuma Province" (Satsuma No Kuni - 薩广国), with the second character being a common simplification for 摩 and the phonetic "No" (の) being understood. Satsuma Province was one of the feudal domains abolished in 1871, with its territory being incorporated into Kagoshima Province.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thankyou so much for your comments. Your help is very much appreciated. It is a beautiful bowl (I think!)quite large and heavy.
I couldn't figure out why it had the shimazu sign in the bowls design yet not in the signature. I thought this might have meant it wasn't authentic.
Also the signature had different embellishments to other pictures I found on the net. Thanks again

Dear Kate

Your object is extremely similar to the below pictured Arhat dish, which I truly regret selling, along with 2/3 of my ceramics collection, a couple years ago.

Kind regards
J.Lim
