Subject:Please help date this Kutani
Posted By: Matt U Thu, Oct 04, 2012 IP: 207.170.194.74

Hello All,

Does this appear to be a Ko Kutani from the 17th Century?

Thank you,

Matt

Hi Matt,

No it isn't. The mark on the backside is the mark of Yoshidaya. They started to build the Yoshidaya kilns in Daishoji in the 1820's so it can't be older than that.

Regards,

Arjan

Thank you Arjan. So I assume you are saying this fuku mark was unique to Yoshidaya and perhaps used later, but was never seen on pieces of older Kutani, correct?

Hi Matt,

Maybe my post above looks a bit to black/white. There are many variations of the fuku mark even the ones made by yoshida. But this execution (from what I've seen used by Yoshidaya) in combination with the Ko-Kutani style and old (dark-greyish) Cobalt makes my think it's a Yoshidaya piece from late Edo. Again... just my opinion/suggestion and I'm open for others.

Regards,

Arjan

Looks more like a 19th century dish, and like Arjan says, of Yoshidaya type/style rather than ko Kutani, although the 'fuku' mark in its different variations was also used on early wares.

I have a similar piece which has baffled me for a long time however have come to the conclusion that it is 19thc but not Yoshidaya. There is the slightest possibility that it is from the Himedani kiln a very isolated kiln which operated for a short time in the time of Ko-Kutani and a bit later. Its design was almost exclusively a bird on a branch
