Subject:George Zee bar
Posted By: Jan Wed, Nov 05, 2003

My in-laws have what I would call a bar - it is hand carved and completely closes up. Manufacturer is George Zee & Co., "kiln dried art carved furniture manufacturers." The no. on it is 59-53727. Am wondering if this is an antique or if it is a reproduction? I do not have a picture of it, sorry. Thanks.

No reason to believe it is other than George Zee, mid 20th century.

Hi. Saw your recent post. I have a beautiful bar that sounds like what the woman wrote about, and would like to find out more about George Lee and Company. The furniture is exquisite. My husband's uncle brought this piece back from WWII, after a Hong Kong trip, on an aircraft carrier. There was also an incredible coffee table, which we don't have. Is the company still in existence, and do they have a web site?
Thanks so much.

My mother recently died and gave a George Zee Bar (handcarved) to me. It is very beautiful.

The number on it is 51-14405.

It was purchased new from the Air Force Base Exchange in 1951 for $100.00. I have not idea what it is worth today.

If you find out a value, let me know.

My Dad bought it in Japan in the '50s. I think the "58" designates year of manuafacture, maybe?

Anyone out there estimating current value?

Hello,
My name is Phil and my Dad brought back a George Zee & Co. chest from a tour as a UN peace keeping mission in Korea, back in 1961. I still have the factory tag and it lists the "date of testing" as 1960-12. My serial number does begin with 60- and the usuall following numbers. I assume that you are correct in your assumpsion that the first digits are the date of manufacture. Phil D. [email protected].

PS My means are not great , but I would be interested if anyone has any items up for sale.

Hello,
My Dad purchased a George Zee & Co. Chest when he was in Korea in about 1960 or 1961. I found and still have , a note that gives the date the product was inspected and kiln dried. The date is 1960 Fall I believe. The first two numbers on my chest are 60 followed by a "-". I therefore guess that these first two digits , which are seperated by an -, stand for the year of manufacture. Seems to make sence. Will you please send me an e-mail with your item pictured in an attachment to the e-mail so I can enjoy the beauty of your item. I saw a more modern chest , somewhat like mine for sale at $800. asking. Have a good day! Philip.

Fred,

Perhaps you know already that the '63' means made in 1963.

This Forum's purpose is not valuations of items. If you think your items have value more than would pertain to good-quality used furniture, you could seek a professional appraisal. You should be able to find similar items being sold by doing a web search.

Good luck,
Judy

Subject:George Zee & Co. Teak Chest
Posted By: Pablo Serrano Thu, Apr 17, 2008

I recently acquired a George Zee Teak Chest and I'm trying to figure out the year it was made/how much it's worth. I believe it is 'pre-war' because of the names such as Nanking and Peking (instead of Nanjing or Beijing) listed on a label on the interior. The label reads as follows:

George Zee and Co.
Art Carved Furniture Manufacturers. Teakwood and Camphorwood Chests, Teapoys, Chowbenches, & toys etc. Orders taken for all kinds of handwork. Wholesale and Retail, EXPORT

Office: 138 Nanking Road (Eastern), Room 204 tel. 14247

Factory: 630/34 Peking Road (Western), tel. 60358

Retail and Showroom: 142 Nanking Road (Eastern), tel. 14247, Shanghai China

Godown: 284/17 Nanzing Road

George Zee, Manager

Cable Address: Georgeze

The metal label does not have any serial number on it, nor does it say Hong Kong. Manufacture location is in Shanghai and it also says MADE IN CHINA.

My theory behind this piece is that Mr. Zee left China for Hong Kong after or during the second World War. Some posts here say that he initially began his operations in Hong Kong, but I believe, taking this antique piece into mind, that he started his operations in Shanghai.

Because of the Chinese civil war following World War Two with the Republican troops led by Chiang Kai Shek, and the communist troops led by Mao Tse Tung, many wealthy Chinese business owners fled China for the stability of Hong Kong, then a British protectorate. Or many Republican troops under Kai Shek invaded Taiwan and subjugated the native people living there.

I believe the reason some of you are finding pieces in Japan is that Japanese troops either bought or seized pieces from China and sent them back to Japan. The Japanese were in China for many years, especially in Manchuria, allowing them ample time to collect Zee's art pieces.

I do believe Zee moved to Hong Kong after the war to start a new factory. This coincided with the introduction of the serial numbers and "Hong Kong" labels you are all finding on your pieces.

My question is, does anyone here know of the value of the pieces that were made in Shanghai, China, more specifically the teak chests?

I have a piece by George Zee, I guess it could be a bar. It is dark wood, with pictures of scenes that appear to be brass inlay, some fishing scenes. It has the George Zee tag on the back. I'd like to know more about its worth, and possibley sell it. I am also thinking that I might like to purchase more George Zee furniture, it seems very unique and well made. please contact me at my email address if you have any info re george zee values, pices for sale or want to buy. thanks

I have not seen any mention of value of any of these teak chests....does anyone know. Since there are so many available, I'm assuming not a huge amount. I do know the one I have was given to my mother by my father for a wedding gift. He brought it from Japan after serving in WWII. Mostly curious and came upon this site. Any ideas?

Hello, my name is Angel. My boyfriend has several pieces of George Zee furniture that his father acquired while overseas in the early 1960's. He has a chest, a bar and a console stereo that still works. If you are interested, email me and I will send you some pictures. We have tried quite a few times to find out more information on these pieces but have been unsuccessful. The closest I got was getting his granddaughter's email address. She said she has no idea of the value on the items. We are planning on moving soon and would like to sell some of the pieces before we move. Please contact me soon if you are interested.

Value is of well-built used furniture.

But modern taste is not so much for heavy pieces of furniture. More people selling than people buying. So do not expect to sell for a lot of money. Try to sell locally, since shipping heavy pieces can be very expensive.

Good luck,
Cal

Hi. I thought I would give a little insight to researching prices for George Zee pieces. They can be found on Chairish.com, 1st dibs, eBay, Etsy and craigslist. The prices vary. My niece sent me an ad for one on Facebook marketplace. It, a dry bar, was listed at 800.00 OBO. I offered 600.00 and she accepted. I also found a set of nesting tables for 112.00. Shipping was what cost me the most. Just do searches on those websites and come to your own conclusion. Good luck!
