Subject:Info. Asian watercolor C. Pratt "Eastern Art Products"
Posted By: Dave Wamsley Fri, Sep 24, 2004

I am looking for someone to help give me info on two watercolor paintings that a friend of mine has. He aquired these in an estate. The woman was almost 107 when she passed away. The paintings are of two Asian figures. I believe they go together because both are titled "Love in Spring". The tag on the back gives the title and also says "Eastern Art Products" Chicago. The artist has signed the painting "C. Pratt". The signature is rather stylized and almost in the shape of a half moon. I would appreciate any information about the artist, value, and any relevant info. Thanks.

I cannot respond directly to your question, but I have an Eastern Art Products original painting by Pratt. It is called the Blue Boy (#8802). I have been unsuccessful in finding any information about the painting. If you receive any useful replies, I would appreciate your forwarding them to me. I will be pleased to do the same with you.

My grandfather gave me 2 beautiful watercolors--"God of Knowledge" and "Goddess of Immortality"-- in the 1950's, and they have the Eastern Art Products (Chicago) label on the back documenting them as orignals done by "Andre". Their size is 24 x 30". They are in red and black oriental custom frames. I believe they may have some value, but haven't been able to track down any info on them.

Dear Don:
I also inherited a painting from my mother who inherited the painting from a close friend. My is entitled Danceo of Butterfly #7621, artist Andre'. It is also from Eastern Art Products in Chicago and my mother's friend told her she bought it in Chicago in the 50's. I took the back off of my painting and is shows a date of 8/18/50. I am assuming that was when it was painted by Andre', and it also states Genuine hand painted design. Did you ever find anything out about it? My mother told me before she passed on the the lady that gave it to her, told her it was worth some money. How much I don't know. If you have found anything out, please contact me. Mine also a beautiful oriental dancer. Thanks again, Leonor.

I also inherited a similar water color from my grandparents. It is an asian water color with two women playing instruments with strings and a man playing a flute. Colorful flowers and foliage are also present. The size is approx. 30x40. Much larger if you count the frame. Signed by Andre. Also there is a sticker that reads, "An Original Rubaiyat Creation Hand Painted" Any help would be greatly appreciated. Huge thanks!!

Eastern Art Products sold very inexpensive framed pseudo-oriental pictures in the 1940s - 1950s. The supposed signatures were evidently invented names, the quality of representation not the best.

Since they were on wood-pulp paper, they are in yellowed and brittle condition.

They were not intended to be or considered to be fine art, but found their way into many regular folks' homes as wall decoration.

Good luck,
Cal

I cant find any record of any Eastern Art Products chicago. What I would like to know; someone stated that EAPC was a co selling inexpensive pseudo oriental pics. Where can I find that info on them. I agree mine has a sence of being crued when first looked at it but coo. What if they were from Korea's folk art period of the late 40 early 1950's. I read that they didnt sign ther folk art pieces. But import was becoming big at that time and they may have signed different names just for us sake. Mine is very colorful which that is how those paintings were discribed (along with being crude) and a bit modern abstract. Mine is not a print at all. I looked at it closely, it also came out of a very high end home. Im just saying I sent a pic of mine. Could have been some Cho Cha-yong followers, I did sneak a peak at the Tiger Exhibition from 1969, and who knows. Just wondering if this eastern art products co existed then where was it what street who owned it. I too though it was just a bit of middlebrow culture, but I dont know anymore. I will add that I did read that when folk art came out in Korea the other older scholars did think that the US Would view it as less then. Hmmm just a thought.

I too have the same "Dance with Butterfly" painting. Any further information on this Eastern Art Products in Chicago? My picture has the same No. 7621. Seems a little suspicious. I'm sure this picture is from the 1950s, because it was owned by a relative. First thought it was of some value, but not looking good!

I find that I have Pratt's no. 8801, 'Goddess Of Happiness At The Gate Of Paradise', purchased at an antique store near Knoxville, Tn, some 25 years ago. I have found only this website that mentions this artist Pratt. Eastern Art Products is the distributor. Have you found any info?

I have a painting called Market Scene by C Pratt with the same labels. This is the first time I have looked up. I brought it about 20 years ago at an antique sale.

We also own a painting, #8802, by "Pratt", from the Chicago Art Products, titled "The Blue Boy". It is a water color and oil mixture. It is in an Oriental setting. We obtained it when my parents bought the home of the Ivory family, of whom James Ivory, the movie Director, was a child.

I am here because my very large Eastern Art Product paintings are both scenes from Paris. They are over 4 ft tall & the paintings are raised in some areas. Then connected & raised then placed on a larger frame of linen. Any ideas. One is called Floral Espergae. Yard sale find and I just LOVE them.

Hi there,
I also have one of these paintings. Mine has a label on the back that reads as follows.

Genuine
Hand painted color harmony
approved
Title: Open Window
Artist: De Loray
Size:28x34
No:7364
Frame: mahog. Deep cove openwork combination
Eastern Art products
Chicago

I purchased this from an antique dealer who was about to retire for $100. The woman was a friend of my grandmothers and she had this hanging on her wall ever since I was 10 years old (Im now 37). I was present on 2 occasions where other antique dealers offered her upwards of $500 and she refused. I got the discount because we were the closest thing to family she had.
About 2 years ago I tried to contact the Art Institute in Chicago about this painting but never did recieve a call back. I think my last option will be to call my home insurance agent and request a rider for it, that way an appraiser will have to come out and look it over and then perhaps we will have some answers. I will repost after this has been done.
-Mike

I also have a watercolor painted by DeLoray from "Eastern Art Products" in Chicago. The tag on the back indicates the painting is named "Summer Goddess" and dipicts an oriental statute of woman and flowers coming from a sphere, cascading onto what appears to be a table, with a curtain also cascading onto such table. The frame is ornately carved and I believe to be mahogany. Has there been any luck tracking "Eastern Art Products" or these Artists? Curious.

I have a watercolor painting signed DeLoray of an oriental girl dressed in a colorful silk kimono playing a lute. I inherited the painting from my grandmother who had received it as an anniversary present back in the 40's. Do you know anything further about this painter or the value of his paintings? I would appreciate any info you have. Thanks. Paula

The paintings I posted did not belong to me and they have been sold at auction. They brought $180 each though I would have estimated them at $500 each (partially because they had such ornate frames). I have received several responses of people who paintings from the same studio or artist but no one seems to have found any more information.
