Subject:Caligraphy and Kanji in Japanese folding book
Posted By: Gman Wed, Aug 01, 2007 IP: 72.129.52.11

Hello,

This is from a three volume set of Japanese folding books.
I have seen almost no other folding books of this type and am not even sure what it would be called.
The page of ink brush caligraphy is on the first page of the first volume, and the page of Kanji is from the last page of the third volume.
Each volume has a page of Kanji which I am guessing is a table ofcontents describing each plate.
Each volume has about 30 or so plates in one continuous folding length.
They appear to be design studies for ceramic vases, laquered tables, incence burners, etc.
Can anyone read this stuff?
Has anybody seen this type of book before?
I am guessing the late 1930's for age.

Thanks :)
Gman

Hello Gman,
i think i can read the date, it's on the kanji page on the right and goes top to bottom: Meiji 42, 3 month 3 day -printed, and 3 month 10 day -issued. and the rest of the page i suppose states the publisher, printer and artist, and propably with addresses
that's very little, but i hope it helps

Yes, the date and publishing credits are on the page of Kanji.

Your book dates from either 1908 or 1910, depending on which date the Japanese begin the reign of the Meiji emperor. The book was printed on March 3, and released on March 10 of which ever year applies.

The rest of the information on that page are credits for the people involved.

I am still working on the title page and will try to decipher it for you.

Hello mikeoz

Thanks for the input.
I am not quite sure what it is I need to know to do more research....the Title? The publisher?

This and the other book with the Indian art were part of a collection of books I bought many years ago.
These two collections had originally belonged to the Craft Center School of Art in Boston, back in 1937.

They may not be rare as in worth a lot of money,
but physically they are as rare as hen's teeth.

I have only seen one other folding book of flower arrangements, online in many years of looking, and it was very low quality compared to these.

I really need to get some better photos, but they are dificult to photograph due to the folding pages wanting to curl up, which distorts the plate.
Heres a few more shots.

Thanks again for all input :)
Best Regards
Gman

This has been asleep for quite some time, but can anyone make out the title of this Japanese folding book, date, publisher?

Much appreciated as always, so glad to see this forum still thriving.

Cheers
Gman
