Subject:Republic Period mystery object
Posted By: Seb Bacon Sat, Feb 13, 2021 IP: 81.2.83.94

This was in a sale alongside a few other items of late Republic Period pieces (or copies - but some at least feel authentic - this one I'm not so sure about).

It was s sold as an incense burner, but is it? I've not seen anything like it before.

I know it says "made in Zhushan in the year Ding Hai (1947)" but I can't read the name / seals.

Not an incense burner and not much of a mystery object.

This is a scroll or paper weight, used to hold down the paper when a scholar is writing a calligraphy or a painting. It might also be used to hold down a scroll while it is being examined or shown off to friends.

They usually come in pairs, but this one looks like it might have been a singleton.

Based on your pictures it's not republican period. But much later.

Thanks. Are you basing that on the brushwork style? It's not a look I've ever seen in the standard reference works, which is why I thought it looked off.

On the other hand, I was interested because it looks hand-painted and is superior in composition to most of the "Republican Period" junk I've seen. Hence why I wanted to find out the artist name.

I'm quite interested in the post-Republic / copy market in its own right, if I had the money and space and time I'd collect that too!
