Subject:Is this jade carving old?
Posted By: Arthur Douglas Sun, Feb 07, 2021 IP: 213.205.240.18

Hello,

Can anyone help me identify this jade carving? Is it jade? Is it of any value? It was previously heavily encrusted in dirt, took me a day to scrub.

That is a carving which you should show to a jade specialist
Going just by what I can see I assume that it is Nephrite, perhaps Ming dynasty It needs more cleaning ! ! ! Where are you located,City? .

Hi Arthur,
It's highly probable to be jade. Nice celedon colour.
However it's my opinion that it is a product of the 2nd half of the 20th century.

Thank you both for your opinions.

So far, it has been suggested as being:

(1) Ming
(2) Qing
(3) 20th century
(4) 2nd half 20th century

The form is definitely unusual, I have only seen three other double bis, one of which was in a table screen and the other a belt buckle.

@Mark, may I ask what led you this conclusion? From my untrained eye, it certainly looks ‘hand-carved'. The edges of the bis are quite rough and hardly ‘circular’.

@Ernest, I am located in a big city in the UK. It is certainly possible for me to have it seen by a specialist, though not at the moment with the lockdown here. Would you happen to have any suggestions for cleaning it? So far, I have been relying on warm water, hand soap and a toothbrush, but the remaining encrustation is very stubborn and doesn’t seem to want to come off (even after a full day of scrubbing!)

More opinions would be useful due to the lack of consensus on this carving.

Arthur

Hi Arthur,
It's for a few reasons.
1. The carving style.
2. The minut chipping on the sides of the high speed tooling. If you look at the sides of the tooling marks you will see what I mean. Tiny chipping.
3. The gunk looks artificial.

In my limited experience, when the gunk is this difficult to remove, it is an indication that it was deliberately applied to deceive. I concur with Mark that it looks like it was carved with modern tools.

Cheers,
Stan

Hi Arthur,
As your in the UK you could show it to a couple of dealers there. Nothing beats hands on examination.
1. Roger Keverne asian art.
2. Littleton and Hennessey.

Update: I have had this carving seen in person by a Christie's specialist, who believes that this piece is late Ming/early Qing, 16/17th century. The specialist commented that the quality of the carving was too high for 20th century. There are intricate details that are hard to see from a photo, and it has clearly been hand-carved, but the quality of the carving wasn't high enough to be late Qing.

Thank you to everyone for your advice.

That's great news from christies.
Nothing beats hand on inspection. Especially with older jades.
