What source does it come from?
Does it have context?
Are you certain you have written it correctly (for example, there is conventionally a small stroke at the top of the 糸 element when written with the round shapes)?

Dear JPH,
Here are the reading of the characters
Left;
肖 - xiào: similar, resembling, to resemble, to be like - Xiāo: Surname
Right;
素 - sù:essence, nature, element, plain, white etc.

However, (re. your Jan.24 posting) do not forget that on your vase in front of 肖 there is a stylized standing lizard, which is actually Radical 162 "walk" 辵 in the Kangxi Dictionary.
Therefore 辵+肖 makes the character 趙 "Zhao"
I have encountered this standing lizard variation
none once.
The other side, lizard behind 素 is new to me, but the analogy can be applied here too.
糸+此 → 紫 Zī
On the other hand, the irregular but generally accepted character order from left to right was necessarily determined by the radical of character Zhao

With regards,
I.Nagy
