Subject:Help with Huge Porcelain Vase
Posted By: Robert Wed, Jan 27, 2021 IP: 98.182.119.129

This is a massive vase over 3 feet tall. No marks on bottom? Is this Chinese or Japanese? At first I thought Japanese but has Chinese characteristics as well. Any help appreciated!!

Hi there,

That's a lovely vase.

Definitely Japanese. It's called Imari, it's technically a sub-genre of Arita porcelain but most people just called it "Imari".

The warriors are Samurai, some of the jingasa (dark hats/helmets seen on some of the fighters) even have Mon making it possible to identify what clan they were affiliated with.

Unfortunately some of the photos are quite distorted and there doesn't seem to be any of the base which would help to date it but it looks to be second half of the 19th to early 20th to me. There were a lot of Imari pieces made about this time for Western tourists and export.

Really nice piece. I'm a little jealous.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

In my opinion it is Japanese Arita ware in the style of Hichozan or Zoshuntei, Meiji Period.
The top has typical decorations used by Hichozan and Zoshuntei and the warriors are dressed as Samurai.
For comparison a Hichozan marked cup and saucer with samurai more or less alike the ones on this vase
Regards,
Martin.
