Can anyone please enlighten me as to the age, significance, or use of this very heavy plate? Thank you!

Based on what appears to be a modern base on the dish, I surmise this is a modern reproduction of a scene showing a section of the "13 factories", actually the offices, of foreign legations at Canton during the early 19th century. Plasticman is sure to know more on the subject.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Your platter was made as a "tourist souvenir" sometime in the recent past. The double foot ring and shape are used when an object is heavily potted. The scene is copied from 19th century painting of the Canton "factories" or hongs. The American flag was,in reality, next to the Swedish one and the malposition was repeated by painters with only second hand views of the waterfront area to be copied. The copies on other shaped porcelains such as yours, were made to capitalize on the desire for "hong" decorated bowls that were, and are, highly prized by collectors.
