Subject:Old Japanese? Woodblock print with interesting writing
Posted By: richard Tue, Dec 29, 2020 IP: 81.148.181.104

Dear All,

Could anyone of the experts out there shed some light on what the writing on the front and back of what I assume, is a Japanese woodblock print means?
This is how I found it the frame and print.
Especially the writing on the back of this print, which can only partly be seen, is what made me curious as to what this is or how old it is.
I did not want to take the paper off the back of this frame, in case i damaged anything important. The brown paper on the back is very brittle but mainly complete.
As always many thanks to those experts who take the time to reply and educate the novices on here.

Stay Safe and stay Healthy all

Richard

Title (Right top)
盡語樓上撰 - Kataritsukushi Rōjō-sen - Exhaust the topic - Balcony selection

夏廼哥 - Natsu no Uta - Summer Song
与鳳亭枝成 - (By) Yōhōtei Edanari
Followed by a 32-syllable Kyōka or crazy song, a comic or satirical genre of Tanka. This type of poetry was poular during the Edo period.

On the left side there are 3 more Kyōkas,
from Hinanoya Shunshi/Haruko (雛廼屋春子), Morizuitei Daijō (森翠亭大杖) and Shunshitei Baimei (春支亭梅明), respectively.

The above four Kyōka poets were active in the first half of the 19th century.

No indication (signature or seal etc.) on the woodblock refers to an artist.
The sheet of paper on the back is a larger-format sheet to write donation amounts and the name of donors, for whatever reconstruction (the upper part is missing).

With regards,
I.Nagy

Your print appears to be what is called a "surimono" . The feel of the work is reminiscent of the style of keisai Eisen (1790–1848).

Michael
