Subject:Yuan,transitional or Kangxi
Posted By: David Edwards Sat, Jan 02, 2021 IP: 218.215.145.165

Hello,
I would appreciate any opinions on this small vase (24cm). Underglaze blue and red. The way the base rim and the glazing of the base makes me wonder if it is earlier than Kangxi?
Regards,
Ed

I've never actually handled a vase like this, Kangxi or otherwise, but imagine if I had one, the copper red color on it would be brighter and more uniform, like it is on a Kangxi-period deer vase (link below) sold a few years ago by Christies.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thank you Bill. Yes I have seen images of that piece.
I believe underglaze red was first experimented with in the Yuan Period. The copper oxide was hard to control and caused a greying of the red in some circumstances. This is one of the reasons why I thought this small vase may be somewhat earlier than Kangxi or Xuande?
Thank you again.

Well, what's that old Outback saying? Never invite an unarmed guy to a knife fight! :)

This is an 18th-century vase, what is the size? Contact us if you would like an appraisal.

Best,
