Subject:Teadust or cafe au lait
Posted By: David Edwards Fri, Jan 01, 2021 IP: 218.215.145.165

Hello,
Can any of you give insight into this lidded vase?
I believe it may be a type of teadust glaze or is it simply cafe au lait? It's around 12.5 cm tall. It has a metallic fleck sheen to it.
Regards,

I've seen Batavian wares of this tone sometimes called café au lait or other times not. The only times I use the term is when the tone gets more like what I show below in the first two bowls from the Nanking Cargo and another pair of cups. In any event, not teadust but apparent iridescence on the surface. Teadust is iron crystals within the glaze according to what I've read.

P.S., if an expert verifies your baluster jar as mark and period of Kangxi, it could be quite valuable.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thank you for your reply Bill. I believe, from what I know of Kangxi porcelain that it may well be period. The difficulty is, finding someone in Australia to handle the piece and to verify.
Regards,
Ed
