Subject:Japanese Woodblock - Shumtei 1767-1818 ??
Posted By: Rob G. Wed, Dec 16, 2020 IP: 2001:56a:fa90:4e00:5

Greetings
I have had this 10x15" Woodblock for quite some time and it is attributed to "Shumtei 1767-1818" although I can find nothing about him online. Is it someone else?

It is a battle scene with Kanji captions included which I cannot read. It is very nicely framed with a silk mat. Definitely not a modern Litho.

Always wondered about this print.

Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best Regards
Rob

Katsukawa Shuntei 勝川春亭 (1770 - 1820)
Print artist.
Original name was Yamaguchi or Nakagawa Chōjurō.
Was a disciple of Katsukawa Shun'ei. Used the pseudonyms; Ryuryusai, Shōkōsai, Kyuko, Suiho-itsujin etc. Lived in Kanda Izumi-chō. Painted warriors, actors, beauties, attractions etc.
He also designed many illustrations for kikyoshi, kusazōshi - popular novels.
Shuntei is notable for his experimentation for Western style landscapes.

With regards,
I.Nagy

I think possibly you meant "Shuntei".
The print looks to me though to be late 19th century and the signature looks to read Harunobu (Hishikawa Harunobu (active 1875-1891), though you haven't given a clear picture of the signature.
It also appears to be a sheet from a triptych battle scene. There is much fading of the yellow and green pigments.
Regards Michael

I. Nagy is correct.
A similar print here by Shuntei:
