In my judgment it's Japanese and probable date of around 1930's onwards.

Hi Mark
Many thanks for your reply and comments.
I have had another opinion that it is late 19th ,early 20th century, may be made in Nagoya.

I felt it also has a feel that it may be by Inaba.

IT is always interesting with these thing the differing opinions.

I do value your thoughts.
I collect interesting small boxes ,I only have three Japanese ones. The quality of the workmanship is amazing .
Would be good to pin down the correct date, but it does not really matter.

Regards Guido.

On reflection based on your additional pictures I would be inclined to think your box is from the late Meiji period 1868-1912.

Hi Mark
Many thanks for your extra comments,as I said,it probably does not matter when it was made the quality is there. There is a lot unknown about cloisonne of this period.
In the" Art of cloisonne " by Fredric T .Schneider.
He says there is some misunderstanding as to correct dating, and errors by some of the early expert who wrote books James Lord Bowes (1834-99)

And also because of the guarded secrets
of the makers and the language barrier.

So no wonder that we are having problems today dating these things.

In my opinion a box may be earlier if it has a lift of lid instead of a hinged lid.

not sure if this is correct ,just my opinion .

Regards Guido.
