Subject:Oriental Prints - Unknown Origin
Posted By: Rick Sun, Dec 13, 2020 IP: 66.27.187.149

Hello,
I inherited what I think are Japanese block prints. I've been told the writing on the prints may be Japanese but a very old dialect. Yet I'm not sure if that is true. If anyone has a translation or an idea of the origin of the writing I'd really appreciate it. Many thanks!

They are Japanese.

麗山烟 - Reizan In (Reversed on the picture)
小樓花聲 - Shōrō Kasei

Typical late Edo period (Mid 19 c.) literary aliases.

根津(下)椎平時行 - Nezu (beneath) Shiihira Tokiyuki
新慶次郎 左ヱ門 高糊 - Shinkeijirō, Saemon,
Takanori

They are probably the names of the persons in a story.

With regards,
I.Nagy

If you were more forthcoming with information - like pictures of the prints - we might be able to provide more help.

Cheers,
Stan

Hi Stan,
You're right. The entire print would be more interesting. I originally took pictures of the writing because I thought it may explain the prints. Unfortunately I'm traveling and won't be home until mid-March. However I will certainly repost pictures of each print. By the way, there are eight prints. The first four prints appear to be a family setting and last four appear to be battle scenes.

Thanks, Rick
