Subject:Is this a jade necklace?
Posted By: Moon Fri, Nov 13, 2020 IP: 2001:980:57ae:1:d49b

Dear participants,

I bought this necklace at auction. They did not tell me what kind of stone it is.
Can this be jade or are the stones insufficiently transparent for this?

Greeting,

Moon

If you can take a close up of one bead, preferably outdoors, natural light, if you have something like that in you country . .it would be of great help. It has to be a sharp photo. .

Dear Ernest,

Thanks, these two photos were taken outside. The beads have no transparency at all, so I think it is a different kind of stone.
Is the color correct?

Greeting Moon

The color is close, however I suspect that it is a softer stone. A specific gravity test would tell you exactly what it is.

Thanks is there also a simple test, which may not give 100% certainty, but is still a good indication? I find the test with weight and water really complicated.

Yes, very ,very carefully ,with a strong needle make a 2 mm scratch on the backside of one bead. you use only enough pressure to make that tiny scratch. then let us know if you can scratch it easily or not.
or inspect the back of those beads to see if there is somewhere a little white scratch, Tell us the results

Dear Ernest,

You can mot scratch it with a sharp needle. And i do
not see a little white scratch at the back of the beads.

Next step is to take the beads to a public library, if you have such a system. Then look for a book which has gem identification. Compare what you see with your beads.
