Subject:Jade (?) - Collector's item or souvenir?
Posted By: Victor Sat, Nov 14, 2020 IP: 2a02:8109:9f40:1d73:

Hi everybody.

What do you think, is this item something to collect?
Size is 20,5cm x 5,5cm x 3cm, weight is 321gr. It can't be scratched by a knive - stone rounds off the point of the knive.

Regards, Victor.

While it looks good. . it bothers me because the test should be made with a strong needle or something like a swiss pocket knife. There is always a visible scratch, black or white. Or if you want to know for sure, get a specific gravity test.
Good luck
Ernest

Could you please provide clearer pictures of the second image where the stem/other appears to be flat on the inside.
Also a close up picture of image 3 where the carving is dirty/other.
Regards,
Mark@imperial

Second thought, a dark background and a steady hand produces photos which are easier to "read"

Gentlemen, thank you for answering. I tryed to make better pictures and used a black backround. Just have the camera from my mobile, but gave my best.
I used a good knive to scratch the stone. A white line is visible, but it seems to be from the knive. I can remove it with my finger and there is no scratch remaining.
Yes, the carving has some dirt on it. But it's just the surface and could be removed.

I found a solution for better pictures. Please take a look:

we are getting closr. I now need pictures of grooves. Prefer dirty small groove, and any large groove, close up, sharp, you can change it to any color, I just want to see the walls (sides)

This carving is a depiction of a lingzhi fungus. It's a very well-known and popular item amongst collectors.
Yours is not a tourist item in my opinion. It's very nicely carved.
I don't think it's old (pre republic period). If you Google you will see many different types of carvings like yours etc.
I personally think it's highly probable to be jade. However it would need to be handled and a specific gravity test performed.

Ernest and Mark, thank you both for answering. I'll try to make pictures of grooves tomorrow.
Twilight is just beginning and daylight should be better for good photos.
Good hint with the fungus - I thought it showed a branch with fruits, the sun and clouds.
Once again - thank you gentlemen and kind regards.

Victor

Mark is right.
It's a genuine old "white jade" carving from republic era... not a fake, but it is what collectors refer as white jade that is not nephrite real jade but some less valuable local substitute white mineral.

There is still people willing to collect those among the 100 families (the commoners). market price would range from 15$ to 70$ depending of size, carving and mineral color and quality... your would be in the 30-50$ range.

regards,
