Subject:I would like some help to date, Help with signatures and frame question
Posted By: Arun Khatri Tue, Nov 03, 2020 IP: 47.195.21.60

I have these paintings with me, says block print at back. Need help with dating and help with signatures.

Also, I have another frame related question. The painting looks in good shape but the mat is faded and frame has some paint loss. If I open up the frame and put in a new mat and touch up the frame, is that OK. Or does the original framing and mat have any value? If I do open up the frame is there any way to confirm that this is a blockprint? Many thanks.

See my responses to your other 2 prints. There is a pattern developing.

Cheers,
Stan

Stan has already identified your prints, however you ask about the mounting and how you can be certain that they are legitimate woodblock prints.

With regard to the mounting, your prints are in a hostile environment and need to be removed from that as soon as possible. In your photo, it is clear that the cut edge of the mat board has turned brown. It was originally white. This is indicative of acidic paper being in the core of your mat board. That acidity has probably already leached into the body of the prints and created a "mat line" of toning damage. This will get worse over time.

Once you have removed those prints from their mountings, and if (hopefully) they haven't been glued completely down to their backing, you will be able to examine the reverse side of the print paper. If these are legitimate woodblock prints, which they almost certainly are, you will be able to observe color bleed through on the reverse side, along with possible rubbing marks from the printing process.
