Subject:Please, I need help with a signature on plate
Posted By: sylvia Sat, Oct 31, 2020 IP: 75.162.117.73 Could somebody tell me what does that signature in gold say or when this plate was made and by whom? Thank you so much! |

Posted By: Bill H Sun, Nov 01, 2020 This is a Japanese dish, which appears to bear blessings for prosperity from the long-life turtle or 'Minogame'. That creature, wearing a trailing coat of seaweed appears to have the company of a Japanese deity whose name is Fukusukesan, a childlike figure who is much the patron saint of merchants and other businessmen. He is seated on your dish on what looks to me like it may be a lotus pad with hands clasped. Below are other conceptions of the turtle (encountering a dragon on a 19th century Fukagawa Koransha libation vessel) and the small deity in one of my favorite Japanese Kutani figurines from the 1920s. Considering the resemblance, I'd think your dish may be about the same period. |

Posted By: Bill H Mon, Nov 02, 2020 The seal looks to me like a form of 'Fuku' (福), 'Good fortune'. An example is shown as No. 37 on Page 59 of 'Japanese Marks and Seals' by James Lord Bowes'. |
