Subject:Would I be wrong in reading this Japanese kanji as "Ram"?
Posted By: John T. Wed, Oct 28, 2020 IP: 2a01:cb05:8362:5000:

Hello me again.

Now, I have been practicing my kanji a bit and I think that for once I might have been able to make out one of the characters on the lid of the box as "Ram".

Yes, there might be something that clued me onto that.

My guess would be this represents one of the animals of the Chinese Zodiac?

Thanks,

Regards,

You got it: 羊 is interchangeably sheep/goat, no gender specified though. Here "ram"

Inscription on box,
鋳銅 - Chudō - Cast copper
羊 - Hitsuji - Sheep
Sometimes also translated Ram or Goat.
The ram in strict sense translates 牡羊 (o-hitsuji), by the same analogy goat translates 山羊 (yagi).

With regards,
