Subject:chinese vase/help for the mark and dating and meaning
Posted By: antigone Sun, Oct 25, 2020 IP: 2a01:cb10:360:ef00:a

Hello,

I bought this big vase, 58cm high, 13 cm and 27 cm large, I think the mark could be hongxian (1915/1916), I found it in my books, so it might be end of qing dynasty, beginning of republic period, I think it is chinese, it was brought back from Vietnam by a french soldier as the seller told it to me,
Without the mark, I would have told it is around 1940 dating,
The drawing is very well done and funny, I can show you more if you want, it is drawn both side, and in different parts,
Thank you if you can confirm the mark and help me for the production date, and perhaps the meaning,I did not search for it yet,
Thank you in advance,
Sincerely,
antigone

That indeed is a nicely-painted 'phoenix tail' form of vase made circa 1916 or somewhat later around the Hongxian period (1915-16). The book 'The Great Fortune', a catalog of the famed Weishaupt collection of late Qing and other Chinese porcelain, illustrates at least a couple of vases of this form with the related Jurentang mark of the Presidential palace used by Yuan Shikai, who became the Hongxian Emperor.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Dear Bill

Thank you so much for your answer and book. Unfortunatly it came broken at the top so the seller gave me back half of the money but I kept it. I like the way it is done.
Sincerely.

In my opinion your vase is from the Republic period 1912-1949.
The jury is still out as to whether any authentic pieces from the hongxian period and bearing the associated marks are in existence since the reign was only about 90 days. From my understanding/reading only a possible handful of pieces maybe in existence and or produced at the time etc etc.
This mark was used extensively during the 1920's on various pieces and qualities therein. I believe yours is one of them.
