太平真君元年十二
月八日佛弟子夏候
我為父母
敬造石像
一區願□
従心此福

On December 8th of the 1st Year of Taiping Zhenjun (440), Xiahou the disciple of Buddha had this stone statue respectfully erected for his father and mother. May their hearts be blessed.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Many, many thanks Mr Nagy for having taken the time to offer your help.

I have one more question.
The seller states (obviously...) that his sculpture is "authentic".

However, I guess that the Chinese language has had some evolution between the Vth century and modern times.
In other words, do you see, in the text, any sign of antiquity? I mean some typically old-fashioned word or phrase, some specificity of the letters design etc which a recent Chinese sculptor, say, of the XIXth or early XXth century, could certainly not know (except a very lettered one); or, on the contrary, any sign of modernity which would demonstrate that the text was written by a (relatively) recent sculptor.
Once again, many thanks
Jean

Dear Jean,
Linguistically the inscription fully corresponds to the 5th century similar votive texts. I think it's not a big investment for the impostors to buy a couple of well illustrated museum catalogues with original inscriptions. Caveat emptor !

With regards,
I.Nagy

Dear Mr Nagy,

Thank you once again for your reply, and you are perfectly right to warn me about impostors. It is because I am prudent that I am asking for advice from skilled connaisseurs.
Best regards,
Jean
