Subject:Kunisada print translation help
Posted By: Stan Mon, Sep 21, 2020 IP: 2601:18c:504:a6e0:d0

Below is another of the 7 Kunisada prints I recently purchased. I believe it is part of a series, but with this assumption and a search of the web, I have come up empty. I hope someone can translate the 2 characters in the cartouche in the upper right to provide a clue for further research.

Thanks for any help.

Cheers,
Stan

Have a pleasant search time !

Hello Stan,
a copy of this print is in the database of the “National Museum of Scotland“. Go to the search site (https://www.nms.ac.uk/explore-our-collections/collection-search-results/ ), click on “Advanced search“; search in “Museum accession number“ for “A.1887.745.49.96“.
I know also an other copy of the print with the series title “Bijin awase“ (美人合) and the publisher seal of Kagaya Kichibei (not online). With this publisher seal I know three more prints of the series with only the series title, your print with the series title and the month name and four others (exept yours) with only the month name (these 4/5 prints without publisher seal).

Hi Horst,

Thanks for the information. All my attempts to find it online yielded nothing.

I have another I haven't been able to find. I'll have to put it out here.

Cheers,
Stan

Coincidentally, I was searching for the unidentified print I just mentioned when I came across the print in the link below. It appears to be from the same series as my print. Perhaps, a different month?

Yes, it’s one of the other mentioned prints of the series without a series title. This print is shōgatsu (正月) [New Year, January].
BTW: I only came across this site by chance. The forum for woodblock prints is usually UKIYO-E Q&A (http://www.ukiyo-e.se/wwwboard/wwwboard.html). :-)
