Subject:Engraved / inscribed ivory agate necklace
Posted By: Sally Fri, Oct 02, 2020 IP: 90.254.45.60

Hi , I hope you are all well. I think this necklace is either very late Ching or Republic era, banded agate and jasper or serpentine.
I'd be very interested to know what the inscriptions say and will add some better photos when the post is live. I've been told the bangle should be tested, could be jade or bowenite.

Hi Sally,
Firstly to ascertain what could be or what couldn't be is difficult with only two pictures that are more or less the same/similar image.
Based on what I can see my gut tells me the agate necklace is modern.
The bangle will need a hands on approach. I don't think it's bowenite. Nor so I think it's jadeite jade. It well may be nephrite jade.

Thank you Mark , very helpful info. I thought the ivory pieces on the necklace could be a little older as they are a bit cracked and yellowish in places but maybe that doesn't necessarily mean they are old? Looking closely at the manufacture I'd agree it doesn't look that old, the clasps are roughly made in base metal, possibly plated and the necklace attached to the clasps with leather thong. The beads seem to be hung on something more fibrous like cotton or silk mix.
